Essential 9 Parts of a Milling Machine: Guide with Names & Diagram

A milling machine is used to machine objects of metal, wood, or plastic material having flat and irregular shapes. The rotary milling cutter rotates to remove material from a workpiece. There may be variations in milling cutter speed as per applications. To make a product, various parts of the milling machines are working. So it is necessary to maintain it in good condition.

1. Base

The milling base is the foundation for resting all parts of the milling machine. It is made of the casting of grey cast iron. One end of the column comes from the base. In some lathe machines, the base is hollow from the inside to store cutting or cooling fluid, lubricating oil with a pump to supply as per requirement.

2. Column

The column is a vertical member that comes from the base to support another part of the milling machine. It is a box shape in which all driving mechanisms are present inside. The vertical member has a dovetail guideway for supporting the knee. The top end of the vertical column is to hold overarm. This overarm can extend inward or outward as per requirement.

3. Knee

The knee is the casting of grey cast iron. It is fastened and slides on the guideways of the vertical column. We can maintain the height of the knee by using an elevating screw. This screw supports the knee. The table feed mechanism and different controls are inside the knee. The top face of the knee forms slideways for the saddle.

4. Table

The table of the milling machine rests on the saddle. The main function of the table is to hold the workpiece during various operations on a milling machine.

By rotating the lead screw under the table, we can slide the table horizontally. This lead screw engaged with the nut of the table to achieve this motion.

In the universal milling machine, we can swivel the table horizontally by mounting a saddle and table on a circular base.

5. Overhanging Arm/OverArm

The overhanging arm is mounted on the top of the vertical column. It is to give bearing support to the cutting tool assembly. The arm gives support to the milling cutter.

6. Spindle

The function of the spindle is to hold the arbor and transfer rotating motion from the motor to the cutter. Various kinds of drives like belt drives, chain drives, or gear drives are there as per application and requirement to transfer the rotating motion. It is the top portion of the vertical column.

The accuracy of the milling machine depends on the strength, rigidity, and stability of the spindle.

7. Arbor

Arbor is the extension for the milling machine. It holds the various cutters of the milling machine. Arbor receives the rotating motion from the spindle and rotates at various speeds according to the requirement.

8. Arbor Support

Arbor support is the other end of the overhanging arm. It consists of a bearing to give support to the bearing and rotate. It helps to align the arbor with the axis of the spindle.

9. Power Feed Mechanism

Power feed mechanism present inside the knee. It controls the left, right, up, down, in, and out feeds. We can control desired feed by using a quick-moving lever.
