Guide of 12 Essential Parts of Fire Extinguisher: Names & Diagram

Overview of Fire Extinguisher Anatomy

Has any one of you faced the problem of fire in your home, public space, or commercial space? If Yes, then how do you extinguish the fire? It is definitely with the fire extinguisher. Because it is available in residential, commercial, and public spaces to control and extinguish the fire, it is an active fire protection device used to extinguish or control small fires, often in emergencies. We can’t use it in an out-of-control fire situation. It consists of different fire extinguisher parts which play a crucial role in maintaining the inside pressure, flow rate, resistance to corrosion, and weight. In this article, a diagram will show all the available parts of a fire extinguisher.

Parts of a Fire Extinguisher

Handle

It is for transporting the fire extinguisher from one place to another place. It has a good operating grip when used in emergency conditions.

Safety Pin

The function of the spring pin is to prevent the squeezing of the extinguisher agent accidentally from the cylinder. It is inserted into the valve, and the safety pin needs to be removed first before use.

Operating Handle cum Level

It is for opening the valve during emergency conditions. With this handle, we can open the valve to allow the extinguisher agent to blow the fire.

Pressure Gauge

It shows the pressure inside the cylinder. It has red and green markings, numbers inside, and a moving arrow. As per the pressure inside the cylinder, the arrow moves and shows the scale of the pressure rating.

High-Pressure Cylinder

The function of the high-pressure cylinder is to store the extinguisher agent and gas at the proper pressure. It is flat from the bottom and dome-shaped on top. The top portion includes the handle, operating handle, pressure gauge, valve assembly, safety pin, and outlet.

The material of the cylinder is steel due to its high strength and corrosion resistance properties. It helps to resist the explosion of the cylinder.

When we use the fire extinguisher under emergency conditions, it creates high pressure inside it. The use of high-strength material reduces the chances of exploding the fire extinguisher.

Valve Assembly

The valve opens and closes through the operating lever to let the extinguisher agent come out. Valve assembly regulates the flow of the agent. It is a forged and machined part of the fire extinguisher assembly.

Syphon Tube

It is a stainless-steel tube through which an extinguisher agent comes out to blow the fire. It is present inside the whole extinguisher assembly.

Gas Cartridge

It is a gas-carrying device that helps to build the pressure inside the fire extinguisher. When we push the operating lever, the gas cartridge opens and creates pressure.

Extinguisher Agent

It is present inside the assembly, which stops the fire’s spreading and helps blow it off. These agents can be water, powder, or Na2CO3.

Discharge Hose

It is a flexible pipe that helps direct extinguisher agents’ flow toward the fire. With our hands, we can change the direction of the hose.

Spray Nozzle

It is the end portion of the hose through which the extinguisher agent comes out to blow off the fire. It is conical in shape and made of plastic.

Spray Nozzle Holder

A holding member is attached to the high-pressure cylinder to hold the hose nozzle. When the fire extinguisher is in idle condition, this holder prevents the hose from hanging down to avoid extreme bend and breakage of the hose.
